When I do a scan with AVAST (in Windows) it seems to think UBUNTU is a virus and stops it from working the next time I log into it.

Asked by Mr. Nice Guy

Hello, I have Windows XP/Explorer and have UBUNTU also. I am using AVAST as my AV, home edition for my Windows/Explorer world. When I do a scan I have ended up having a warning a couple of times that it detects a virus in Ubuntu, but can still use UBUNTU. Then, I have also scanned a couple of times and it says it detects a problem, and when I got to open up Ubuntu, I cannot and it still says it is installed though. I have totally uninstalled twice and re installed but I don't want to keep going this route. I like Avast, can I make it stop attacking Ubuntu? Thank you.

Hello Mr. Nice Guy,

Can you tell Avast to ignore or not scan certain folders or drives?

Hello, thank you for your suggestion. I am under the impression that Ubuntu would not need Anti Virus protection as much as Windows? I have the Avast on my System to protect the Windows/Explorer side of my machine. I occasionally use Mozilla or Google Chrome too. I am not sure how to keep the AVAST from messing with the Ubuntu program in my PC though, I guess I will have to research some more.
Thanks for the link, I may use it later on!

Hello Nhasian, thank you for the reply to my question. I don't know how to "tell" AVAST to leave Ubuntu alone when it scans the rest of my C drive and folders, files, etc. I am not really that savvy when it comes to internal mechanics of PC's. I may need to question the AVAST people.
Thank you,
Mike

Well, no problem known but I hate to find out the hard way; if I scan my PC again with Avast it may stop my Ubuntu from booting up again afterward. I wouldn't be that worried if I knew what to do to wake it up again, but the only way I have found to get it back is to unistall, re install and that gets old fast, not to mention then loading in 300+ updates etc... hahaha..
thanks,
Mike

I suggest you to install Ubuntu NOT using Wubi.

If you have installed Ubuntu via Wubi please uninstall it read http://wubi-installer.org/faq.php

Installing Ubuntu using Wubi make Ubuntu less robust and all problems that you will have to Windows can be affect your Ubuntu partition file.

I strongly suggest you to install Ubuntu+Windows in dual mode creating a real Ubuntu ext3 partition.
In this mode you can use Ubuntu and Windows ad usual and then using installed Ubuntu you can save or repair damaged (due viruses or other issue) Windows partitions data.

- Here the steps to install Ubuntu 8.04.1 https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GraphicalInstall (pretty the same for Ubuntu 8.10)

Is very easy to install, if you need info please ask.

Thank you

Mr. Nice Guy

Please don't reply via mail to launchpad mail notification but visit directly your question Launchpad site link.

This: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/57383

Replying via mail to launchpad message might expose your email address to the net and you will give a lot of
spam.
