Ubuntu is not detecting the full memory

Asked by Oscar

Hi,

I recently bought an Acer Aspire 5920 with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 4.0 GB RAM. Then I installed a 32-bit version of Ubuntu 8.10 in a dual-boot configuration with Vista. Everything seemed to be working fine. However I've noticed that, while Vista can detect the full 4.0 GB RAM, Ubuntu reports only 3.0 GB.

I've been reading diverse forums. Some seem to suggest a change to 64-bit system while others talk about using a different kernel (specifically linux-686-smp). Now I'm confused (I'm new in the Ubuntu/Linux world, btw).

Could you give me any guidance as to where the problem might be and whether the suggested solutions might work?

Thanks.

Why are you using the 32 bit version of Ubuntu? you should use the 64 bit version.

Vista 32 bit may report that you have 4 gigs of ram but it will only use 3 gigs of it. if you have Vista 64 bit it can utilize all of the system memory. the same thing with Ubuntu.

according to Acer for an Acer Aspire 5920:

unless your laptop has an alternate configuration, then it has an Intel Core™2 Duo Mobile Processor T9300 which does infact support 64 bit operating systems :)
