Cannot change from US to UK keyboard layout

Asked by davechapel

After a recent recommended update of Ubuntu 8.04 first I found the screen resolution was fixed at 800x600 which I solved by booting in recovery mode and fixing the X-server. Then I found that the keyboard is in US layout instead of UK. I've tried changing it to UK in System/Preferences/Keyboard/Layout but the change doesn't work. Every (English) version of the keyboard layout I try leaves it in US mode with the ampersand (@) over the 2 key.
I'm just using a generic 105 key keyboard.
Any suggestions?

Dave

Go to System, Preferences, Keyboard. Open the "Layouts" tab and click on "+Add...". On the "Choose a Layout" screen click on the up/down arrows for "Layouts". Choose "United Kingdom" and click on "+Add".
Back in the Layouts tab, click on the UK entry to activate it as the default.
If you wish, you can click on the USA entry and then click on "-Remove".

Andre, it was your last line that solved the problem - deleting the US entry even though it wasn't selected!
