Ubuntu 8.10 x64 does not shut down on hp dv5000

Asked by James Main

When I have ubuntu shut down or restart my laptop, it logs off everything and then I get a black screen with a bunch of text and it just sits there. I have to hold down the power button to shut it down. Is there a fix to this?

Another thing, when troubleshooting it when it went to the black screen with text, i tried ctrl+c and alt+f4. Alt+f4 did something, but it just displayed "<my username@mypc> login:" i tried typing in my credentials but nothing was happening.

I have an hp pavilion dv5000 (dv5140us)
OS: Ubuntu 8.10 x64 (with all latest updates)

if you press Control-Alt-F1 or F2 it should allow you to log into a new shell. after entering your credentials type:

dmesg | tail

let us know what the output says. maybe it will clue us into what is preventing the shutdown from completing.

well, when i did press alt+f4, the system was at a freeze, anything i would type wouldn't show up on the screen.

but the problem is gone now, (i didn't know this would be a fix) but after i installed the ati drivers (that i downloaded from ati's website) everything started shutting down correctly. all is well!
