RTL8187SE Wireless LAN Controller (rev 22) not working in Ubuntu

Asked by DaveyC

I am a total newbie to Linux but do love the look and feel of Ubuntu.

I have 8.10 installed on my Advent 4213 netbook. It has a RealTek 8187SE pci wireless card. This is not showing as present when I use linux, so I cannot get on my wireless network.

I have downloaded NDIS Wrapper and tried loading the latest driver which appears to install ok but the card is still not showing as present. The sysytem does however instantly recognise the 3G network card (which I dont use but could do if I had woreless broadband).

I have read endless posts on this but can't get to grips with half of it as I seem to need a degree in computing just to get up and running. Is there any one click way or bit of software to getme up and running or amI doomed to keep using XP...............?????? As you will have guessed, I am not a techy, so apologies If I havemissed anything obvious. Could anyone out there help me resolve this and help me bin my XP installation which is dog slow and doing my head in????

Cheers,

Dave :-)

Hi,

Please follow these instructions:

http://forums.msiwind.net/post55525.html?sid=b8345605eb4ff16f384b12dd1bbf5064

Because you are using Linux kernel version 2.6.27-9-generic, choose the following wireless kernel module package:

http://boskastrona.ovh.org/download/linux-rtl8187se-modules-1023.2@2.6.27.9.19.deb

Mark

Hi Mark,

Thanks for all the help. I am currently re-installing Ubuntu8.10, as all the netwrok connections stopped working.

I had tried following the instructions but must have messed something up as it all just stopped on me.

Had downloaded drivers from:

http://boskastrona.ovh.org/download/linux-rtl8187se-modules-1023.2@2.6.27.11.14.deb

However, this wasstill giving me the error message when rting to install the drivers.

I am getting to the point where I may just change the wireless card fro one that is supported.

Thanks,

Dave

Hi,

OK, after reinstalling Ubuntu 8.10, I think your kernel version will be 2.6.27.7

Because I think you will be using Linux kernel version 2.6.27.7, choose one of the following wireless kernel module packages:

http://boskastrona.ovh.org/download/linux-rtl8187se-modules-04coffee@2.6.27.7.11.deb
http://boskastrona.ovh.org/download/linux-rtl8187se-modules-1023@2.6.27.7.11.deb

These kernel module version 2.6.27.7 packages worked in

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/57182

Be careful when choosing the right module version. For example: you were previously running the 2.6.27-9-generic kernel and trying to mix it with the http://boskastrona.ovh.org/download/linux-rtl8187se-modules-1023.2@2.6.27.11.14.deb drivers, which were compiled against a newer kernel. This cannot work.

The Linux kernel version and driver version have to be the same.

Hope this is clear,

Regards,

Mark
