what is a root partition n how do u make it n recoginise it?

while installing ubuntu 8.10 n repartitioning my whole hard disk i ws asked dat root partition not defined, how to define it and how to identify it?

instead of having drive letters like windows (ie C:, D:, etc) linux's filesystem builds off of the / (root). like /home/[yourusername] or /media/cdrom

you can make the / take a majority of your hard disk, or you can give it 10-20 gigs and then the rest can be a separate /home or /data partition for your personal files. here's some more info on partitioning:
