Can't find program in synaptic but can install it with terminal

Asked by mtm

Hello, i have just installed ubuntu 8.10 with wubi. And have just a little experience with ubuntu from earlier version(but not much)

I have a problem in synaptic:
So, i have added the repo = main, universe, restricted and multiverse. But the "installable from cd/dvd rom" doesnt work, it gives this error:

Failed to fetch cdrom:[Ubuntu 8.10 _Intrepid Ibex_ - Release i386 (20081029.5)]/dists/intrepid/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz Please use apt-cdrom to make this CD-ROM recognized by APT. apt-get update cannot be used to add new CD-ROMs
Failed to fetch cdrom:[Ubuntu 8.10 _Intrepid Ibex_ - Release i386 (20081029.5)]/dists/intrepid/restricted/binary-i386/Packages.gz Please use apt-cdrom to make this CD-ROM recognized by APT. apt-get update cannot be used to add new CD-ROMs
Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

And my problem is that i cannot find vlc, compiz, emerald, fusion-icon, and every other program that i want to install in synaptics. Its writen below 26194 packages listed, 1314 installed. I dont know whats wrong, but i can install all the program that i said earlier with the terminal "sudo apt-get install ...", so actually it is already in the sources? but why doesnt it show up in synaptics?

anyone can help me? thank you

Maybe you just had the wrong search preferences in synaptic. There is different tabs on the left that order the packages according to where they come from. Also the new search function is a bit confusing since there is one in which you can search for various attributes and another one which is called "quick search".

I find that with quick search it never give the program that i want.. Now it is working using the search button(before i have tried the search button too, but it can't find it.. maybe after the restart it helped)

It is confusing the search in synaptic(i think its better when i use the 7.10)
Thank you very much..

Actually, I also think that "quick search" is quite buggy. But I can't put my finger on it exactly. If you have a good example where it fails, feel free to post a bug report. Or join the discussion on the current reports, eg

bug 288797
bug 269361
bug 281898

Wubi :( Not a full proper install, just sitting on Windows shifting sands?

I agree with Tom

I suggest you to install Ubuntu NOT using Wubi.

If you have installed Ubuntu via Wubi please uninstall it read http://wubi-installer.org/faq.php

Installing Ubuntu using Wubi make Ubuntu less robust and all problems that you will have to Windows can be affect your Ubuntu partition file.

I strongly suggest you to install Ubuntu+Windows in dual mode creating a real Ubuntu ext3 partition.
In this mode you can use Ubuntu and Windows ad usual and then using installed Ubuntu you can save or repair damaged (due viruses or other issue) Windows partitions data.

- Here the steps to install Ubuntu 8.04.1 https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GraphicalInstall (pretty the same for Ubuntu 8.10)

Is very easy to install, if you need info please ask.

Thank you
