Are some fairly common printers not supported out of the box?

Asked by Ricardo Bánffy

I was trying to set up my very popular Epson C87 printer and, to my astonishment, I noticed there were no drivers for it by default (I used to set it up as a C86)

Since it's a fairly common printer (both C87 and C86), I suppose I did something wrong during installation. It worked flawlessly under Edgy.

Did the drivers move? Shouldn't they be installed by default as I am sure they were under Edgy?

Sorry, it's not included in Ubuntu and not in the OpenPrinting database. Perhaps they forgot to add it? :)

Try using the driver for C88.

Thanks, fheinonen, but that's weird. The pop-up list was not populated until after I installed the gutenprint drivers, which are not installed out of the box.

Maybe we should file a bug regarding that, see if someone with a fresh install out of the CD confirms it (I installed off the last beta, so, some weirdness is expected)

It works flawlessly with the C86 driver, but if it's not installed by default, we may have a quality issue at hand.

How do we know how popular is this printer line?

The drivers are installed by default. You can find them from this manifest.
cupsys-driver-gutenprint 5.0.0.99.1-0ubuntu2
libgutenprint2 5.0.0.99.1-0ubuntu2
libgutenprintui2-1 5.0.0.99.1-0ubuntu2
