AR242x wireless chipset not working in Ubuntu

Asked by kego_thundergod

I have an Atheros wireless issue. I have the drivers that came with Kubuntu. I can't connect to my wireless, my SSID is hidden but this shouldn't be an issue, if it is, I'd like to know, and is there a way to connect while SSID is hidden. I can't seem to get the card to work at all though.

Any help would be appreciated.

there you go. I really hope this helps. lol. I've used the command line in other versions of linux but only very limited amounts. all the guides on-line are pretty convoluted for doing things via the command line. I wouldn't mind it if someone wrote some auto-installer scripts for stuff it'd be a lot easier ya know? :P Took me forever to get things installed. I used Adept for most everything, so why shouldn't adept be able to handle drivers? lol anyway, my real issue is just this frikken wireless, i'm clueless as to why it isn't working. It's terribly frustrating as Kubuntu is the first linux i've installed on my own machine (i've damn small before, but that isn't installed to my machine and i've only had limited use with it as well)

Hi,

Please connect your ethernet card to your wireless router using a LAN cable and then follow the instructions from forumuser "reasoner" at this location:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=902860&highlight=AR242x

This wireless problem has been discussed on
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/52089 and on
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/46457

Mark

"reasoner's" instructions don't make sense. There is no System/Administration/ or Applications/Accessories.

Terminal is located in applications/system. I can't find "Administration" anywhere. I'm running Kunbuntu 32 bit edition. And I still can't get anything to work. could someone please help? this is really frustrating.

Hi,

No need to feel frustrated. :-)

Reasoner's instructions were made for Ubuntu users, but the procedure should work for Kubuntu too, because the installation procedure is done via the command line...

Ubuntu uses Gnome as graphical interface, so applications are located in a different place in the interface.

So System/Administration/HarwareDrivers in Ubuntu can be translated to Applications/System/HardwareDrivers in Kubuntu.

Applications/Accessories/Terminal in Ubuntu can be translated to Applications/System/Terminal in Kubuntu.

So Reasoner is just basically telling you to fire up a Terminal and enter the commands from http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=902860&highlight=AR242x

Mark

thanks a lot! Every step of this worked, except one i can't modify the file "/etc/modules" I'm in the group root, it says that only the owner can write to and change permissions of this file, so what do i do now? As it isn't going to work without this last little piece i forwent the gedit as i don't have and tried to use Kate instead, I need to know how to change the write permissions on the folder "ect" in root. thanks, this would be a great help.

well i tried to logon as root "root logins are not allowed" so i went to command shell environment and logged in as root then executed the "Startx" command, and edited the "Modules" file manually, and manually started as instructed. It now attempts to connect to my network, but i sit right in front of it and it says i have 0% signal strength. Is it because the SSID is hidden? and if it is, how do i solve this without broadcasting my SSID?

By god I've figured it out! Well, i first enabled my SSID broadcasting, when i found a suitable signal strength i connected and disabled wireless SSID broadcast and i remain connected! Thank you for all your help!!

Just install the backported drivers for generic kernels:

sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-intrepid-generic

Once you've done that go to the hardware section and activate the new module and deactivate the old one.

Can you help with this problem?
