really struggling to enable multiverse and universe

hiya

i have a dell mini 9 netbook which runs on ubuntu 8.04, i would like to download music and other applications etc, i've looked around on the net to try and figure it out and read i need to install universe and multiverse repositories, this i have tried to do through the software sources and through the synaptic package manager and no luck as a box keeps coming up saying there are errors.

i have also tried it using the command line followed these instructions:

1. Open a terminal and open your sources.list:
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

2. Assuming you are using the default sources.list, you should be able to replace everything currently in that file with the following:
## MAIN REPOSITORIES
deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy main restricted universe multiverse

## MAJOR BUG FIX UPDATES produced after the final release
deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy-updates main restricted universe multiverse

## UBUNTU SECURITY UPDATES
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hardy-security main restricted universe multiverse

3. If you wish to enable the backports and proposed repositories as well (recommended), then add these lines as well:

## BACKPORTS REPOSITORY
deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy-backports main restricted universe multiverse

## PROPOSED REPOSITORY
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hardy-proposed main restricted universe multiverse

4. Now save and close the file, and then reload package information:
sudo apt-get update

5. If that command runs with no errors, then you have successfully enabled the universe and multiverse repositories.

when doing any of the three i have tried it is always coming up that there is errors?? any help at all would be really appreciated

goto software sources on your computer and enable them. make sure you have a live internet connection

Which errors do you get? Please post the output of sudo apt-get update

Be careful when using the proposed repository as it is used to test packages to be released and may contain faulty packages.

Is there no additional information in the error notifications, they only say "there is an error" ?
Also could you paste your /etc/apt/sources.list here, please.

For some reason apt tries to get packages for an architecture 'lpia' that isn't supported.

What does
 dpkg-architecture
return?

It's the architecture used by Ubuntu Mobile. I don't know where to find packages for this architecture. Maybe you could find help at http://www.ubuntumini.com/ or by asking here where to find a repository for Ubuntu Mobile.
