Why is using Ubuntu so complicated?

Asked by Broken Wings

The first time i have had to use any Linux OS is really rough XD. Can't really do much. If i want to play any games i will have to install something called wine, and i have to do it manually which i have no idea what to do. If i want to watch a video that uses DivX i have to put a code into something called a "console" i always thought that was an Xbox or something. I can't put music on my iPod without going deep into the system in order to install a program.

So i guess my question is, is there ANY way possible to have this stuff automatically installed so I don't have to fool around with anything and screw up the whole computer? Something like this "[Download], [Next], [] I accept." Then after that it proceeds to download. Also do i REALLY have to have the CD in order to install games with wine? Because i have quite a few bought online. If noone can help me with that then can anyone tell me how to pull up the command thing? As far as i can tell there is no "Run.." feature XD. Or is there a firefox console i put this in "sudo apt-get install mozilla-mplayer".

Thanks for any help anyone can ofter ^^.

Installing ubuntu or linux programs can be done as follows

To use windows programs you can sometimes use wine to run and install them in ubuntu

It is however recommended to use a linux alternative if possible

A console or terminal in ubuntu/linux is a command line interface to the system

like cmd in windows

you can start a ubuntu console by using Accessories->Terminal

also, you don't need the CD to install anything if you have an internet connection

if the system asks the ubuntu CD when you try to install something this probably means that the CD is still considered as a software source

to change this go to

System->Adminustration->Software Sources
uncheck the check box next to the CD or DVD at the bottom of the Ubuntu Software Tab

I would also recommend you make sure the restricted Software sources are checked (propietary drivers, copyright restricted, ...)

Well,
The Ubuntu operating system is not Windows compatible, this is why you must install wine (WINdows Emulator) to run windows programs (i.e. windows games). However, there are tons of Linux games you can play without wine (and mostly are free).
If you go to Applications->Add Remove... you can download and install automatically thousands of programs by clicking the Apply button. To access software with license restrictions you must select "all available applications" at the "show:" pull-down menu.
You can access the "console" going to Applications->Accessories->Terminal and can add a launcher on your desktop bay doing a right click over the icon and select "add this launcher to desktop".
Hope this helps, let me know.

Other than the terminal thing i still don't get what you guys are saying =\. I want something that i can click to install and not type "code /;[-1234344543233442365]\\*#!#$%" to install it. Do i have to type anything or do any type of computer work to install programs using wine? I hope not because i'm computer illiterate.

Well i don't mean games as in Applications-->Games. I mean something like World of warcraft, and Battlefield 2.

I don't mean Applications->Games neither, did you go to Applications->Add/Remove... ?
Of course, there is no War of Warcraft or Battlefield 2, if you want those, you need windows or a windows emulator, please see the following links:
http://www.blogsofwar.com/2006/06/10/world-of-warcraft-on-linux/
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WorldofWarcraft
and you can see that deserve the effort.
Hope this helps, let me know.

I tried using crossover to install it but some weird error occured and i don't understand stuff like this. (CXConfig->read(/opt/cxgames/etc/cxgames.conf)
Product version=7.1.0
6929: Grabbing the lock '/tmp/.wine-1001/cxgames-wine.lock'
6929: Got the lock)

I don't reallly know how to read that so i don't know where the error is nor how to fix it.

Well,
WineHQ is the free version of crossover, to install WineHQ got to Applications->Add/Remove.
When the window start put wine at the search field, then check the check box at the left of Wine Windows Emulator and the click on the Apply changes button.
Once the install is finished go to:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WorldofWarcraft#Installing%20WoW
read carefully because there are more than one alternative to install WoW depending if you have the original DVD or not, (see alternative 2)
Hope this helps, let me know.

I did that and it said it failed and it gave me this message.

This is a major failure of your software management system. Please check for broken packages with synaptic, check the file permissions and correctness of the file '/etc/apt/sources.list' and reload the software information with: 'sudo apt-get update' and 'sudo apt-get install -f'.

Well i found out that the broken program was Java, although it doesn't have a date on it i don't know if i should remove it or not. I'm not sure if i need it to use firefox because it said something about running in Mozilla and other web browsers.

Ok, lets do it step by step.
As Koen Beek suggested before, go to System->Administration->Software Sources
and uncheck the check box next to the CD or DVD at the bottom of the Ubuntu Software Tab and verify that the rest are checked (if not, do it)
Then open a console going to: Applications->Accessories->Terminal
at the console type:
  sudo apt-get update
and press <Enter>
when the command is finished type:
  sudo apt-get install -f
and press <Enter>
then try again with the Wine installation.

I think you have to ask yourself why you want to use Ubuntu. You are having trouble because you are trying to make Ubuntu into Windows and that is going to lead to a great deal of frustration. Ubuntu is not a drop in replacement for windows or osx. It is an alternative. That means that while you can do nearly all the same things in Ubuntu as in the other OSs, you will do them differently. You can play games in Ubuntu - but not windows games (okay, Wine helps fix that but it's not ideal). You can listen to music but Apple doesn't support Linux so an iPod isn't the best choice. You can watch DVDs but you will have to configure some of it yourself because of all the licensing garbage. If you are willing to do these things then Ubuntu can be a great alternative. I've used it happily for over 3 years and will never go back to the "old" way. Others are less willing to spend the time to learn new approaches so they are continually frustrated. If you truly want to switch then give it some time. It isn't really all that hard once you get a fell for the "Linux way".

Your other issues with installing sound like a problem with the package manager. To fix it, open up a terminal and type

sudo apt-get install -f

I think you can also open Synaptic and choose edit - fix broken but I've never done it that way so I don't know if does the same exact thing or not.

As mentioned in the error message you posted above you may also need to to fix a few other things if you've you made changes to the sources.list for example.

I figured out the version i have, but i've never even heard of Ubuntu until last week XD. I got this computer for christmas and my sister didn't pay attention to what she was doing. Trust me if i could have went with vista i would ^^. But anyway onto the situation at hand. I have done all this and it still has an error. So i'm gonna delete that java application because if its broken then it isn't working, and right now all i need is the browser to work so i should be fine.

Hey,
All these people are speaking jibberish. Seems to me they are trying to talk you out of using Linux. Why the Heck would anyone prefer Windows to any other OS ever? Must be confused!

Listen! contact me and I will walk you through the setuup of the perfect easy t use Linux system. You will never, ever utter the words windows and computer in the same sentenance again other than to say window should never be on a computer and they should outlaw windows and the mention of it inthe same sentenance with the word computer

Hi,

Are you complaining about the speed and quality of a free service? Before learning how to use a computer, perhaps you should learn how to communicate with people.

Ubuntu is a Linux system, and is designed to run Linux programs. You are trying to run a Windows executable with Ubuntu: this is not a Linux program, it is therefore not surprising that it does not work. Of course, some people will try to explain to you that there is a software named "wine" that is able to run some Windows programs in Ubuntu. This is true, but you should not rely on it. If you want your Ubuntu to work properly, run Linux programs.

If you're unhappy with the fact that you bought a game that can run only with Windows, complain to the company who sold the game, not here. If it is difficult to use your iPod, it is because Apple does not provide any software for Linux. Complain to Apple, not here. If these companies were providing open source software (as all soft you may find on your Ubuntu), these problems would not exist.

DivX can be played for instance with a software called "VLC". You should find it in add/remove.

Tip: if you go to add/remove and type "divx" in the search field, it's kind of magic: you'll get a list of software designed to read divx.
