The supported way is to upgrade first to 7.10, then to 8.04 LTS and finally to 8.10. You can try to manually upgrade in one step by changing /etc/apt/sources.list to intrepid and run apt-get dist-upgrade but then you are on your own and most likely there are a lot of difficulties you have to resolve by hand.
