Sony Handycam DCR-DVD610

Asked by NakiMum

Hi there
I've got the Sony Handycam DCR-DVD610. It's got a memory card (works great), and the small dvd discs (don't work on laptop or Ubuntu).
All the programs I've tried don't recognise the handycam via cable. I've tried Kino, etc and none recognise the camcorder.
Someone got a suggestion or advice?

Hi tmc1961
the camcorder isn't seen at all. Not even as a USB device. I've got 3 ports that I can use and I tried it on all of them. But nothing. When I use the memory card it gets seen, but not the camcorder on usb cable.
Hope this helps.

Digikam works well, have you tried that? F-spot works well as well.
You might try to boot into another desktop.
Do ou use KDE, gtk or gnome as your desktop? One may work better than the other as I have discovered.

Tried Digikam and F-spot, none work.
I have gnome desktop. If I need to boot into another desktop, please explain the steps to me asif you are talking to a child - i'm one of those not so bright computer uses.
Thx in advance

Hello,
I have found that some applications do not work as well in one gui as the other.
you will go to the synaptic package manager. search for KDE, or KUBUNTU and install the items.
Now when you boot up, you will be given a chance to change the session, desktop.
Once all is installed, boot click on options, choose KDE, you will now be in Kubuntu/Ubuntu. Try the camera and software now

Hiya tmc1961
I'm just downloading the packages - I opted for KUBUNTU.
To get everything up and running between household chores, 2 yr old daughter and my sanity it'll take me awhile. But I'll post the outcome as soon as I've done everything.
Thanks for your patience. It's greatly appreciated. Especially when I'm running out of patience. LOL

Hi there
finally got everything ready. I used k3b - it reconised the camcorder and data, but it gave an error message as follows:

unable to mount

Any ideas?

Sorry me again
I did a search in synaptic manager for kde - I got an extensive list. Do I install everything or there just a few I've got to install?

Installed Kubuntu / KDE but nothing worked. It still 'sees' the camcorder, but it's unable to mount.
Love Kubuntu / KDE, will be sticking with it for now.

Thanks

Talk about being stupid - I've found my own solution:

I had to finalise the disc before being able to play it on anything.

Thanks to all who tried to help me with this one. Sometimes it just takes a fresh brain to get mine working again.
