I inserted a USB drive into my computer, and the whole system shut down, and the computer won't start up.

Asked by Ken

I had recently received a desktop computer from a relative, which was a home-built computer, and ran on Ubuntu because the old Windows system was virus-ridden. I decided to try out my new USB drive, called a Kingston Data Traveler, 2GB. I inserted the drive and the whole computer shut down, no slow rundown of the shutdown process, just instant shutdown. The light went off slowly, which surprised me. It's an HP computer model, but with an all new inside. I think that it was trying to run a program that wasn't compatible with Ubuntu, and caused a system crash of some sort. Please help me as soon as possible.

The problem is it won't start up. At all. Will not turn on. No lights, no sounds, no nothing.

OK.
This has nothing to do with the thumb drive or OS.
This is a hardware issue.
Make sure the plug is in the wall, the power works to the plug or switch the plugs.
Simple I know, KISS= keep it simple stupid
Now If power is not an issue to a plug, check that the power is working in the system, may be the power supply is no good

If you plugged the USB thumb drive in a front USB port, it is possible that the port was not wired correctly and you fried something, that would explain why it shut down immediately. You should test your thumb drive in another computer to check it is ok and working.

Can you help with this problem?
