How do I create a new password to log-in? I've forgotten my password.

Asked by Viveca Teuber

I created a password late at night and now I'm completely incapable of remembering what it could possibly be. At this point I've tried three or four passwords and none work. Can you help? How does one create a new password? This is the first time I've used Ubuntu. Thank you!

Just a note for verbatim users like me.

MAKE SURE YOUR NUMLOCK KEY IS ON!!!!!!

I didn't, and had 3 directions instead of numbers for UNIX password.

If you have a problem resetting it, that may be solution to original password.

Solution, Try Numlock ON 1st, then if doesn't take, try Numlock OFF 2nd time. (Assuming you know password)

Example I use 6 digit Number plate of 1st car. Example ABC 123

Not ABC (end, down arrow, PgDn) 101 keyboard
