Excessive time taken during the modprobe stage of boot-up

Asked by Michael Marley

On my Dell Vostro 1500 running Kubuntu 9.04 64-bit, the modprobe stage of startup (as reported by bootchart) takes an excessive amount of time. In the bootchart I have attached below, the computer is just sitting there modprobing for a little more than 10 seconds during bootup, while both the CPU and the disk are idle. Does anybody know why this happens, or what I can do to fix it? I have also attached the output of lscpi -vv, lsusb -vv, and dmesg.

I just realized that you apparently cannot attach items to question reports, so they are attached to this Ubuntu forum post: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=6489492

Not sure, but looking at your dmesg.txt, this could have something to do with it :

[ 21.168274] generic-usb 0003:046D:C20A.0001: timeout initializing reports

what usb devices do you have?

That is kind of what I thought too. I have 1 external hub with a mouse, a game controller, a floppy drive, and a printer attached. Also, there is an internal USB Bluetooth adapter. Here is the lsusb:

Does unplugging the Logitech rumblepad make a difference?

No, it doesn't. Still the same. Thanks for helping, though.

Hmm, I'm stumped - reckon you'd need to pull devices one at a time, checking the results as you go.
Of course, if you've got a driver being loaded from initramfs then it's going to timeout whether the device is plugged in or not.

Can you help with this problem?
