Asked by qwertykey15

i am one of multiple users on this computer and i would like to try using ubuntu
however, i doubt the other users would be impressed if they suddenly had a different operating system
as i have never tried using ubuntu before i would like to know if it is possible to download and use
ubuntu but just for one user as oposed to everyone
does anyone have any suggestions as to if this can work and how i would be able to achieve this

1) You can use and install Ubuntu from within Windows using the so called wubi installer.
You just burn the .iso image and then place in the CD, this will automatically run the installer (if I'm not mistaken).
Note: If you install it this way it will install Ubuntu as a normal windows application, within the Windows NTFS partition.
I would recommend this type of installation for testing purposes.

2) You can boot your machine using the Live CD, and install Ubuntu normally AND keep Windows. You then select your Windows to be the main operating system. You can choose Ubuntu from the boot menu.
I would recommend this type of installation for full experience.

Of course (as always), make backups of your hard drive, so you don't face any problems afterwards!

yeah use the live cd of ubuntu and install it on another partition
be carefull in choosing the partition where to install ubuntu otherwise the whole disk will be used and windows will be deleted with all the data.
so choose the manual partitioning and installing option among the 3 options : automatic, guided and manual.
you need a swap partition of about 1gb min for better perfoemance. that will act as an additional ram for ubuntu only. so the bigger swap , the better.
good luk
then you will have the full os under your control. only you can access it.
doesnt it feel great?

Try burning a Live CD. Rebooting your computer with this CD in the drive will load Ubuntu from the disk and not touch your hard drive. This means it's slow, but you can try it out.

If you live the live cd, you can install to the hard disk using the install icon on the desktop of the live cd. This will give you the option of either (a) splitting your hard drive into 2 partitions, one windows and one ubuntu (good, but reduces the amount your windows friends can use. the installer will partition the dive for you); (b) use the whole disk (bad); or (c) manual (avoid this too).

After installing, you get an extra menu before windows or ubuntu starts allowing you to select windows or ubuntu.
