out of range

Asked by ashok

When starting my computer Ubuntu Hardy Heron is slow to fire up and before it starts there is a message out of range for a minute or more. Grub shows only a 3 items so I suppose its something else. It would be nice if the computer is ready to go quickly as my Apple Imac and not like winxp which also takes for ages.

Thanks for any advice.

Before going any further, please try to clean apt cache.

Yes, system boots a little faster after cleaning apt-cache.

Had trouble with the command localepurge and did not find any items in the orphanend box packages list. Local purge options were a mystery with aa and dj.. abreviations and nothing like EN_GB or fr_ch for french and switzerland.

Still see Out of range message while booting but all is somewhat faster.

Hope my comments make sense as I am following the instructions to the letter.

For instance $ sudo apt-get install package(s) did not deliver anything. Are the brackets to by included () with the s in packages.

Thanks for any follw-up.

Ashok

This error is most caused by hardware.
unplug and re plug the hardware, cards and keyboard, monitor, etc.....

Hi ashok,
I'd suggest only to clean apt cache with the provided command.

Did you read about properties of 'localpurge', information is in Synaptic
quote:It will automagically be invoked upon completion of any apt installation run.
...does provoke strange, but usually harmless, behaviour of programs
...Please definitely do abstain from reporting any such bugs blaming
localepurge if you break your system by using it. If you don't know
what you are doing and can't handle any resulting breakage on your own
then please simply don't use this package.

In Synaptic you may search for e.g. ttf- or locales, but these removals certainly don't effect speed.
Usually most space take kernel packages, which are content of the apt cache.

Please read notice attentively
quote: ...following command replacing PACKAGE(S)
Hence,
sudo apt-get install package(s)
is meant as an example, e.g.
sudo apt-get install vlc ##one package
sudo apt-get install vlc libflashsupport flashplugin-nonfree ##three package(s)

As one can clean apt cache with commands in one line (as described in the link above), there also can be packages installed with commands in one line, that's the trick.

It would be helpful to post exact message about 'out of range'.

Another useful step for trial&error could be checking the power management.

Or carefuly check services in System -> Administration
