Ubuntu 8.10 64 bit fails to install, leaving system locked

I have tried the installation from a live DVD and my own downloaded alternate CD (checked using md5sum and confirmed okay). Both installations stop at the same point (after having installed all software and preparing for the final clear up). The last state displayed is: "removing ttf-arphic-gbns001p". In case this is relevant, when the system locks, the caps lock light and the scroll light on my keyboard are flashing at about half a second intervals.

I have tried the 32 bit version and that gives a different problem which I am leaving aside for now since I would really prefer the 64 bit one to work. As a little background, my hardware has not changed for a while and has worked trouble free with 8.04 installed. Both 32 and 64 bit versions of this release are okay suggesting this may not be a fault with my hardware. However, my hardware details from running lshw are:

I had a similar problem. My install from the download of the 64 bit system would get to about the 59% done point, then hang. I have a hp/compaq system with amd dual core processor, 3 gb memory. The machine is new and is being configured as a dual boot windows machine.

linux-magazine.com has a special issue on ubuntu 10 on the newstands now. It has a dual sided install disk in it for both 32 and 64 bit systems. This worked. The regular issue #98 Jan. also has the disk.

Of course life is not that simple. I can't get adobe flash to work. This is a current problem and the procedure to install is available at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=772490.

You seem to be much more capable than I am. I've decided I don't want the hassle and have no particular reason to run a 64 bit system.

Resolved this by resetting the BIOS to defaults. Ubuntu 8.10 64bit is now installed and working and fully updated. However, the only way I could get either wired or wireless networking was to edit the /etc/network/interfaces file directly. The Network Manager applet proved to be unusable - and remain so. Its current state suggests I am not connected - but clearly I am!

I'll treat that as a separate issue which I may report as a bug after some further research.

Thanks to "rdtindsm" for his comments. Adobe Flash seems to work fine after I chose to install ubuntu-restricted-extras. I did this without reference to what may have been installed as part of Ubuntu 8,10. It may help you and is a little less complex than the link you refer to.

To make life easier each time you upgrade Ubuntu, I collect all the apps, utilities, etc., that I add and put them in a script which installs them from the command line, as in:

sudo apt-get install filezilla
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
...
and so on. Any of these could be installed from Synaptic Manager but I find it more convenient to run a script which adds all the features I want in one go.
