nVidia GeForce 6100 Driver, cannot display above 800*600

Asked by amandel

After reviewing many posts and trying countless times, I saw #54476, which is very much what I am experiencing.
Output from #lshw -C video
 *-display
       description: VGA compatible controller
       product: C51G [GeForce 6100]
       vendor: nVidia Corporation
       physical id: 5
       bus info: pci@0000:00:05.0
       version: a2
       width: 64 bits
       clock: 66MHz
       capabilities: bus_master cap_list
       configuration: driver=nvidia latency=0 module=nvidia

Output of #cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Section "Device"
 Identifier "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
 Identifier "Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
 Identifier "Default Screen"
 Monitor "Configured Monitor"
 Device "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

Many attempts at trying to activate the drivers result in a light black screen with just the sliver of gray at the top of the screen, where, I suspect the screen exists.

Still at a loss to explain why no other screen options above 800*600 will work.

I am reasonably adept at troubleshooting, but this is not working.
Any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks.

This is what is in the xorg.conf after I run the activate the drivers. This is what produces the unreadable screem. Hope this helps.

I have continued to review the forums and other posts. Many of the fixes worked in the past, when you could config or edit the Xorg.conf file directly. Now, when you use the supplied GUI, it overwrites it. I now many of the experienced folks here are just shaking their heads about yet another nVidia graphics card issue, but this is what prevents Linux from being nothing more than a fringe desktop. I tried installing OpenSUSE version 10.0 a couple of years ago. Had problems with audio but video worked. Now with Ubuntu, sound works but video is not acceptable.

I had Mandrake running in 2000 on several machines and all was well, with almost no fiddling around. Worked well for 12 months, then the .Com went bust. Have been using Apache for years, Java, Telnet, etc.

Sayonara to Linux again, but will continue to use Apache, Joomla, PHP and MySQL under windows xp.

A shame really.
