Can you give some more info on:

- version of ubuntu (or are you using kubuntu?)

In general in about 90% of the cases it's your volume controls of the microphone set wrong.

To check and change this:

- press the right mouse button on the volume icon in your top panel and select "Open volume controls" (the wording might be different as I use the Dutch language in ubuntu).
- For all devices shown in the list (behind "devices"): select them and check in the lower part of the screen if there is a "microphone" slider. If there is: increase the slider to 100% and make sure the muting button is switched off.
