trying to install avast antivirus

Asked by Maria

I am trying to install Avast Antivirus. As suggested here I downloaded the .DEB version and it gives me an error something i386 architecture. So I kept reading in the answered questions and found that you can make manually. I did it and this is what I got. Is this correct?
mariajose@ubuntu:~/Desktop/down them all$ sudo dpkg -i --force-architecture avast4workstation_1.2.0-2_i386.deb
dpkg - warning, overriding problem because --force enabled:
package architecture (i386) does not match system (amd64)
Selecting previously deselected package avast4workstation.
(Reading database ... 149859 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking avast4workstation (from avast4workstation_1.2.0-2_i386.deb) ...
Setting up avast4workstation (1.2.0) ...

Processing triggers for man-db ...
And now what do I do?
Thanks for all your help

You are trying to install a 32bit package (i386) on a 64bit system, that's why you get that error.

Don't worry about installing an AntiVirus Software, you don't need one. If you still want to install an AntiVirus, get ClamAV (and the GUI front-ends klamav or clamtk) which is Free Software and is available in Ubuntu repositories.

Thanks for your answer, I've read a lot and I know I don't need one, but I will love to feel safe. I read about Clam but it said it didn't delete the virus. SO you really think I don't need it?

You can look at this thread to see how to install a 32-bit antivirus on your 64-bit system : http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=232857

As mentionned above, an antivirus for linux is not really necessary and its main use would be to scan files that you'd send to other people that have windows although theoretically linux viruses are possible.

also have a look at this page : https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Antivirus
