Asked by Maria

Please Help,
I am new to ubuntu and has very little knowledge of computer in general. I managed to install all of it with almost no problem, but now every so often my update manager tries to update and it gives me this message.
Failed to fetch cdrom:[Ubuntu 8.10 _Intrepid Ibex_ - Release amd64 (2008 1029.2)]/dists/intrepid/main/binary-amd64/Packages.gz Please use apt-cdrom to make this CD-ROM recognized by APT. apt-get update cannot be used to add new CD-ROMs
Failed to fetch cdrom:[Ubuntu 8.10 _Intrepid Ibex_ - Release amd64 (20081029.2)]/dists/intrepid/restricted/binary-amd64/Packages.gz Please use apt-cdrom to make this CD-ROM recognized by APT. apt-get update cannot be used to add new CD-ROMs
Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

Can you help me, please????? I really have no clue what it means or what I have to do but I get the impression it is not making the updates

hi Maria

don't worry. this is to make installation of packages from the cdrom possible. if you want to eliminate this in the future, open up synaptic, then under settings click on repositories. you will find an entry similar to

cdrom:[Ubuntu 8.10 _Intrepid Ibex_ - Release amd64 (20081029.2)]

that is currently ticked (i.e. enabled), remove that tick (i.e. disable it) and click OK.

The error will disappear. By the way your packages get updated anyway even when this error does appear.

should you have any further questions regarding this issue don't hesitate to ask!
