Can't get wireless to work

Asked by ceuthophilus

I recently had my hand held to determine that I already had driver installed, and I can "see" my wireless network (see #55126).

I am unable to establish that connection, likely due to stupidity/ignorance.

I went here:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/WirelessTroubleShootingGuide

but can't even get past the first instructions, for example, in my installation of ubuntu (8.10) there is not a nested series of menus such that:
System > Administration > Networking (as indicated early on in the above page)
instead I have:
System > Administration > Network Tools
this does not have a "connections" tab (as indicated in the above page).

moving on, I tried typing in a terminal window:

    sudo pccardctl ident

(see 3.1.2 in above web page)

and this results in:

Socket 0:
product info: "The Linksys Group, Inc.", "Instant Wireless Network PC Card", "ISL37300P", "RevA"
  manfid: 0x0274, 0x1613
  function: 6 (network)
Socket 1:
  no product info available
sjtaylor@Zanthum:~$

so I know the card is there, but I don't know if that means I've achieved the first step of "Before using this guide, check to see if you already have a wireless connection set up." (from near top of above web page).

The next terminal command past the 3.1.2 command that I did (above), looks like it changes settings, and I'm hesitant to do that, because it seems like I'd just be fiddling with things without knowing why, and possibly making my situation worse.

Under System>Preferences>Network Configuration, on the wireless tab, there is a connection called "Auto wireless03" - when I highlight this and edit, it has three tabs. above them are two check boxes. The first check box is "Connect automatically" which is checked. The second is "System setting" which is not.

------------------------

within this ("Editiing Auto wireless03"), the first tab, "Wireless"

SSID: "Obscure Studies Institute" (this is what I have on my notes from when the cable guy came and installed the wireless)
Mode: "Infrastructure" (my notes say I should have "Mixed" selected, but this does not seem to be an option)
BSSID: (this is blank)
MAC address: (this is blank)
MTU: "automatic"

the second tab, "Wireless Security"

Security: "WEP 40/128-bit Key" (my notes from when the cable guy installed the wireless indicate I should have security at WEP(64 Bit), but this does not seem to be an option)
KEY: (this has my Key 1, which is what I have to type into friends/family laptops when they want to use them at my house, so they can connect - it is 10 characters, letters and numbers)
WEP Index: "1 (Default)"
Authentication: "Open System"

Third tab, "IPv4 Settings":

Method: "Automatic (DHCP)"
DHCP CLient ID: (this is blank)

---------------------------------------

I don't even know where to begin!!

If you go here:

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/55126

you can see the results of me typing the following commands into my laptop:

sudo iwlist scanning
nm-tool
iwconfig
ifconfig
sudo lshw -C network
lspci
lsusb
uname -a
dmesg|grep ound
dmesg|grep etect

ok, try this

SSID:Amblypygi
Mode:Infrastructure
BSSID: (this is blank)
MAC address: (this is blank)
MTU: automatic

mind you,

SSID:wireless03

IS the other ap that you can use to connect to; CAUTION - pls do not mix connection name with SSID for clarity reasons although they can be the same; I prefer different for obvious reasons.

encryption, I understand that both ssid's have keys enabled (on) so you MUST enter the EXACT key otherwise you will not be able to connect regardless; the keys are of various types, strength and different formats - the most common are hex keys and passphrases; pls pay special attention to this entry (and the others too for that matter) - talk with the ap administrator to find out exactly the key, its type and strength then proceed with the entry; you can see the key when entered to make sure that it is correctly entered.

that's about it - if all was done as above you should be able to connect in no time.

best of luck.

Thanks Peter B,

but nope, that doesn't do it.

I ensure the settings are as you indicate above, taking special care that the key is the one I always give people who need to connect to my computer, then attempt to connect.

It churns for w while (little loopy swirl icon over where the wireless connection icon resides on the top taskbar), then comes up with a window called "Wireless Network Authentication Required", where it says:

----------------------------------------------
Authentication required by wireless network
Passwords or encryption keys are required to access the wireless network 'Amblypygi'

Wireless Security: WEP 40/128-bit Key
Key: (yes, I've carefully checked repeatedly. It is correct)
WEP Index: 1 (Default)
Authentication: Open system
----------------------------------------------

I think I must need some other setting fixed??

Steve.

Steve, there is no doubt reading the message that there is a problem with the key

from what I can understand from your prev ticket the ap's, both, have WEP type encryption keys; the strengths are different.

I'd recommend to log into the router/ap and remove the keys, all of them, save the settings, remove any keys entry in the connection config file, make sure that the default connection box is checked, save the file, reboot and you should be able to connect. if successful then you can enter into the ap settings a NEW key - hex 128 bit WEP if you prefer should do just nice - then edit the connection file encryption entry accordingly - EXACTLY as entered in the ap setting.

you can create a new connection file for the second ap identified, again following the same procedure as above; be v careful with the encryption keys - that's their role, to protect; as said, if their type, format and strength do not match (ap aginst pc) there is no way that a connection can be established. Personally I use 810 for quite a while and NEVER had any problems with establishing a wifi connection does not matter where ap located - airports, hotels, public places, starbucks cafees etc.

just an addendum to above, .....'all of them'.... pls read it as CAPITALS, v v important!

secondly, please make sure that THERE ARE NO mac filters enabled in the ap settings - IF THERE ARE pls MAKE SURE that the pc interface mac IS EXACTLY the same as the entry in ap table.

if you're not familiar with ....'hex 128 bit WEP'.... key

IT MUST HAVE 26 hex characters no more no less.
