Boot fails due to file check. Inode "long_number" has EXTENTS_FL flag set on filesystem without extents support.

Asked by Vanostaajen

I was configuring desktop settings and suddenly ubuntu was going terribly slow and windows turned grey.
So I restart (by normal means and with a lot oof patience) and it runs a "routine" filescan. It stops at 25% and this is the problem: "Inode "long_number" has EXTENTS_FL flag set on filesystem without extents support."
And it sais it's in read only mode and it can't fix the problem. But I can manually fix it:)

so I type: sudo fsck
and it works:-D.
I asks me if I want to fix this problem (Y), "clear Inode "bla bla bla"?"(Y).

So why ask a question? Well I'm pretty new to ubuntu(1week and a few days) and I wonder if I'm doing the rght thing. Because the Inodes without extents support keep coming and do I have to keep clearing them? Because I'm just doing what seems right. I have no Idea if it's right.
So far I cleared about 10 Inodes, do I continue?
Or should I reboot?
Or something else?

Many thanks in advance,
Thomas.

ps: If it's possible, can someone explain what Inodes are and what my problem is?

Ok I figured out that Inodes contain information about files in my system. But How do I know which Inodes I'm deleting? Maybe I'm just deleting all the dates from my photo's.... I don't know.
Can anyone tell me that I'm not deleting anything important when clearing these Inodes?

I need my pc tomorrow so if nobody has a better Idea then I'll just continue clearing a million of Inodes untill I get at an end.

OR is it possible to quit this fsck(and save the changes I made), try to reboot and if I fail retry fsck?

Thanks,
Thomas.

So I deleted all the files. Ubuntu starts.

But: when showing ubuntu desktop etc. it shows a winsow with: "fails to initialize HAL!" (What is HAL!?)

So I think: no prob. I'll just reinstall ubuntu from my cd.
But I'm unable to open the cd tray....

I'm getting pretty frustrated because I'm continiously talking to myyself. Is there anyone who wants to say some kind words of comort (even if you don't know the solution to my problem).

OK nevermind,

I'm now able to open the cd-tray. so whooptiedoo!
So I reinstalled Ubuntu and that's that. I used the same disk as in my first install, so I hope that my problem had nothing to do with any possible mistakes in the CD.

I'd like to thank everybody (and I do mean EVERYBODY) who helped solving my problem. And special thanks for Vanostaajen who has always been there when i needed him:)

fijne feesten!,
Thomas
