Internet connection - Live CD

Asked by batanga

Is it possible to connect to the internet using the Ubuntu 8.04 Live CD without messing up my existing Windows connection.

I'm using a Virgin ADSL connection set up as a dial up connection on my Windows Network Connections.

issuing command sudo pppoeconf
in a terminal may help
this command would bring a program in terminal that would ask for your user name and password
while configuring your connection

read this documentation before you proceed

What I was wondering is, do I have to go through this longwinded proceedure as outlined above to get an internet connection with Live CD or is there a simpler way. Surekly if I make all these changes I will lose them every time I close down Ubuntu.

if you have a flash drive then install your ubuntu onto it (even on 1 gb usb flash drive and that installation can be used for installing ubuntu on other systems)
it will take 750+MB for installation space and rest you can use for making it persistant
using live cd go to menu -- system->administration->create a usb startup disk

i have myself tried it and it works -- all of your configuration will stay

hope you benefit from it

Hi Amit
Not sure if you were answering my question. At this stage I haven't got round to trying the usb drive thing. Maybe one day. As you can see from my oripinal post I can't get onto the internet.
In the mean time I have tried other distributions and I find I can get an internet connection using my Thomson Speedtouch ST330 usb modem when using PCLinuxOS. Basically it worked first time after following the first boot and the initial screens to automatically set up the network connection.
So, what's going on with Ubuntu? I've tried everything I can think of to establish a connection but nothing works. Ubuntu doesn't even allow me to specify a PPPoA type connection or specify the VPI or VCI values as I can do with PCLinuxOS.
I really want to get Ubuntu to use as an operating system on a couple of pc's I have as an alternative to Windows. From what I've seen on the live CD I like it so far.

well if you can connect to net using PClinuxOS i would be happy if you use it as just trying to get Internet working can be very frustrating as it reminds me of my initial days with ubuntu..........just trying to get internet to work

well i don't have the answer you are looking for as i dont know much about the PPPoA type

the usb installation thing is exactly not that difficult as the application to be used have a nice interface and is built right into live CD .... it will take only 10 min max. it is a cool feature

any way ---------HAPPY NEW YEAR----------- in advance

Can you help with this problem?
