need wifi help with 8.10 - am noob

Asked by jeremystark

My drivers are installed and working. And I can see my networks shown on NetworkManager but I can only connect to linksys at only a third of speed(four bars at the top-right that says 33%) I would normally get in Vista on my goblue76(the network I'm trying to connect to) network.

Oh, when I'm trying to connect to goblue76 a popup window says its trying to acquire network address.

I installed Ubuntu 8.10 via Wubi
Also, I can't do some things like create an new network with Vista because Vista will only work for me in safe mode.

I think this is eveything whoever helps me will need.

Hi,

I don't know the exact answer, but you might try to:

1) Check if the speed is really lower than expected, for instance by downloading a big file and timing the download time both with Windows and Linux.

2) Try to get closer to the modem. You can see that Cell 01 - Quality=50/100 Signal level:-64 dBm Noise level=-72 dBm is far from the best quality signal, one should not hope to reach the maximum speed in these conditions.

3) Bit Rates:1 Mb/s; 2 Mb/s; 5.5 Mb/s; 11 Mb/s; 18 Mb/s 24 Mb/s; 36 Mb/s; 54 Mb/s; 6 Mb/s; 9 Mb/s 12 Mb/s; 48 Mb/s, but Capabilities: Supported: yes Speed: 1 Mb/s . Is your real connexion close to these 1 Mb/s? It might be a driver problem then.

4) If it's a driver problem, one possibility is to fix it using ndiswrapper (along with the Windows driver). https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/Ndiswrapper

Hope this helps!

"goblue76" "ZyXEL" have keys set (on)

in order to connect to any of them the encryption keys MUST be entered first - use Edit connection to do so.
