I am assuming you want to install Windows (.exe) applications. Such applications are not supported in Ubuntu, you may be able to install some of them using Wine but they are not designed to be run in Ubuntu.

You may want to check this list of equivalent applications:
http://doc.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/switching/applications-equivalents.html

To find out more about Wine:

You need to install wine to install Windows programs. Even then, whether or not they work is really a hit or miss, especially with games. Consult wine's application database to see if specific programs work:
http://appdb.winehq.org/

Also, if you don't already know this, you can use Pidgin if Yahoo Messenger doesn't install.

Can you help with this problem?
