Hello Xan. gparted should work with any drive. No matter how it is connected. Are you sure your usb drive can't be found inside gparted?

Hi alex,

In theory, you plug your usb disk and then automatically ubuntu mounts it (in desktop, icons)
Unmount these icons (right click)
And then run "gparted" in console.
Then change drive in gparted and select ubuntu.

Is this you ask?

Xan.
