hibernation/suspend

I have a gateway m-1625 and am running ubuntu 8.10, the latest version and when I try to put the computer in hibernation mode (standby), the machine just goes to a black screen, ultimately I have to turn off my computer with the power button and turn it back on, a hard reset... what can be done about this problem??

The problem with suspend/resume is that many hardware manufacturers handle this process in a variety of ways. While most hardware combinations are supported, there are sometimes problems.

If you don't mind getting your hands dirty, there is an excellent guide to figuring out suspend/resume problems at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=3066404

Otherwise, filing a bug report, as you have already done, is an excellent way to help get support for suspend/hibernate in the next release.
