Ubuntu 8.04 64bit freezes with RaLink RT2561/RT61 wireless pci card

Asked by AndriyK

I run Ubuntu 8.04 64bit.
Kernel version 2.6.24-22-generic.
Wireless adapter: 03:01.0 Network controller: RaLink RT2561/RT61 rev B 802.11g
From time to time the computer freezes while accessing internet (running Firefox or Synaptic).
It freezes completely, i.e. it does not react on anything except the "reset" button.

I found that similar problem has been reported as a bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/194650
And the bug is marked as "Fix Released".
But I cannot figure out what have I exactly to do to implement this fix on my computer.
(I am not an experienced user.)

I tried to install
linux-backports-modules-2.6.24-22-generic
but the result was even worse: the wireless connection disappeared.
I reported it as a bug.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/307953
But unfortunately nobody pays attention to it.

Nobody answered my question how to return the previous driver. So I have to reinstall Ubuntu from the very beginning. Now wireless works, but the computer freezes from time to time.

I would greatly appreciate if somebody could explain me, how to use the Fix to the Bug194650.

If you need additional info on my computer, please tell me how to obtain it, i.e. what should I type in the terminal. (As I said, I am not an experienced user.)

Thanks in advance.

P.S. Wireless-related freezing is a painful problem for many users (see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=832383 ). It also happens with my laptop that uses another wireless card, but not so often as the desktop with RaLink RT2561/RT61 .
