I had exactly the same problem. Here's what to do:

1)Make sure you are connected to the internet
2)Open Synaptic Package Manager in System>Administration. Enter your password.
3)Search for the package linux-backports-modules-interpid.
4)Once you find it, double click it.
5)If Ubuntu asks you to install some more packages, accept it.
6)Click Apply Changes. Ubuntu will ask you to confirm.
7)After installing, go to System>Administration>Hardware Drivers. Wait a little. You should see two atheros-related items in the list, one enabled and one disabled. Enable the disabled one and diasble the enabled one.

At this point do a restart. If your laptop has a wireless switch, make sure that it is on before Ubuntu starts. Before connecting, you have to go to System>Administration>Hardware Drivers and make sure that the newly installed dirver is enabled. If not, enable it by hand.

Click on the Network Manager icon (the one on the top-left with the two side-by-side computers). Do you see something like Wireless Networks and a list of networks? Also, could you tell me wihch drivers are listed in Harware Drivers and if they are enabled or disabled? Maybe you could disable and re-enable the newly installed driver and then try to connect.
