No-Password Login

Asked by Daniel Brumbaugh-Keeney

There are multiple users of the computer. I would like some of these users to not need to type a password at login, merely selecting the username. I suspect it might be accomplished by setting the user's password to nothing, but I'm not sure if that's the proper way to do it.

Where would I find "System Administration"? I don't see it in menus or a cursory glance through apt.

Are you using Ubuntu (GNOME), Kubuntu (KDE) or Xubuntu (XFCE)? :)

You should then see in the menu System -> Administration -> Login Window -> Security tab -> check "enable automatic login" and select your user for automatic login.

If not, press the keys ALT+F2 and run this command: gksu /usr/sbin/gdmsetup

As far as I can tell, that automatically logs in a particular user on startup. Rather, I would like a list of users to be shown on startup, but not require a password.

I think that would require to set their password to be empty. Not requiring a password is really not recommended, everyone would have access to their account.

This shows the user list on login:
System -> Administration -> Login Window -> Local -> select "Style:" as "Themed with face browser" and select "Human list" as the theme.

There might be a way to allow login without a password, probably you have to edit a pam module or a pam.d configuration file, such as /etc/pam.d/common-auth - I'm not sure though. But it's worth to research it.

Can you help with this problem?
