xp, mandriva 2009, and ubuntu tri boot

Asked by greg

Hi.

I'm new to linux (but not computers), and recently installed Mandriva 2009 preview on my XP laptop - no problem, a dual boot was created automatically by Mandriva installation. As i'm still evaluating mandriva, I did not want to remove it (in fact, I'm also not sure how to remove it yet). Yesterday, I got ubuntu 8.10 (from Linux Format), and installed it... everything seemed to go OK, it took some space from a previous ntfs partition (just like mandriva did), and installed itself, and eventually left me on the ubuntu desktop. I rebooted... but was given no ubuntu option to select (just the previous mandriva/xp boot options). Ubuntu did offer to import documents/settings for xp and mandriva (which i did not need), so it knew they were there - so why no boot option? How do I boot into ubuntu?

All the best,
Greg

Tri boot should work under the following settings-

XP is installed in a primary partition(may be at first part of your HD)
Mandriva installed at a logical drive(not free space,, logical drive)
Ubuntu installed in a primary partition (suppose at the end of your HD)

both linux can share the swap partition (1 swap for 2 OS)

the installation should be done as follow-

XP(primary1) then mandriva(logical) than finally ubtuntu(primary2)
