Laptop wont install nor boot from any distro

Asked by mark.j.tarr

I was trying to install Ubuntu 8.10 on my laptop,
it loaded to menu screen, I selected install (also tried live cd),
the next screen comes on with the orange progress bar and then it frezzes,
after researching online I changed a setting,
live cd then booted, I then installed onto system (from live cd & from startup menu),
Ubuntu installed onto my system and then I restarted laptop,
now it frezzes on the bootup screen (orange progress bar),

I have tried different version and different distros, all frezzing,

Is there an issue with linux on newer laptops, I assume this must be a bios thing as its from startup even after removing windows,

Is there a fix for it.

Many Thanks in advance for any answers.

Mark

I think you need to set same setting as you have put using the install cd...

Can you tell the setting you have set on install...?

Thank you

From the menu I pressed F6 other options,
I then put a cross next to acpi=off, noapic, nolapic, edd=on
Then the installation worked.

The boot up frezzes and laptop doesn't respond,
From the grub menu if I select recovery mode,
It does various text based things and frezzes on,
Marking TSC unstable due to TSC halts in idle.

Ok try to do the same on the installed kernel:

1) reboot the pc
2) press ESC when you see the GRUB row
3) on the first row press "e" to edit
4) select the 2.nd row on the new content and press "e" to edit
5) add at the end of the row your parameters
6) press "b" to boot

Please tell if Ubuntu now start.

Thank you

I have done another install and still same problem,
But I have narrowed it down, to just acpi=off, noapic.
The install works with just those 2 selected (X next to them),
Still same problem with booting.

Still no joy,
I'm just trying different variations,
I.e. Do I need to but a space or comma between commands.

Please don put any commas when you type parameters:

Wrong → acpi=off, noapic, nolapic, edd=on

Right → acpi=off noapic nolapic edd=on

Then if them works you need to put them into the /boot/grub/menu.lst file

2) to permanent add your additional parameters you must write them to the /boot/grub/menu.list file so the are passed automatically at boot

Please edit the file /boot/grub/menu.lst and add "noapic nolapic acpi=off" to the default kernel parameter

Please open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:

sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Search the row

# defoptions=........ your options

and add the acpi=off noapic nolapic edd=on parameters

# defoptions=........ your options acpi=off noapic nolapic edd=on

save and exit

then type:

sudo update-grub

Reboot your pc

Hope this helps

When I select b for boot it restarts my laptop, and it seems as though this removes parameters I put in.

Once again thanks for help.

Many thanks for your help.

It seems I will need to reinstall windows,
Which is a bummer, I thought I had finally binned it.

Cheers

Try to change passed parameters or try to pass them one by one or with different mix of them:
then also always remove the "quit" and "splash" parameters... to view more message at boot...

then try:
acpi=off

then try:

acpi=off noapic nolapic

then try
acpi=off noapic nolapic edd=on

and/or different mix, there are also other kernel parameters you can try to pass:

Hope this helps

Sorted.

Many thanks.

I was putting parameters on wrong line they should
be at the end of kernel line.
