Hi.
To what type of vpn server are you trying to connect? pptp, cisco, openvpn, ...? Maybe you can use an alternative application to connect.

I have no idea, why Ubuntu for 64bit mechines spreads with soft, which doesn't work with it.

Yes, I too consider it might be pptp. Just to be sure, let me know if you followed the instructions given here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=91249&highlight=pptp (if not, please try to follow them).

I guess it eventually will give you the same error you reported. You can find here the packages releases for 64 bits: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/edgy/amd64/network-manager (upper left box).
Maybe, if you're sure that you're using the right release, you can report this behavior as a bug.

If everything fails you might consider not using network manager but use the pptp config instead. Here's their home page: http://pptpclient.sourceforge.net/
It's in the repositories.

According to this: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/NetworkManager
you should, and I quote,
"Go to System -> Preferences -> Sessions In the Startup Programs tab, click Add type "nm-applet", click OK. log out of your gnome session, and log back in again"

Can you help with this problem?
