Corrupt video playback with Compiz effects enabled.

Asked by Brian Taylor

I am having problems playing any videos (DVDs or captured video) on Ubuntu 8.10 AMD-64 with an ATI HD 3870 graphics card. I have downloaded the drivers as part of the restricted packages and enabled desktop effects (compiz). The desktop effects work fine but playing movies is impaired. The movies flash (think being in a movie theater where the projector bulb is going out). Disabling compiz (desktop effects) and playback works fine.

I think I have the latest drivers and system updates. It seems strange that this problem only occurs when desktop effects are enabled. This functionality did work in Ubuntu 8.04.

Hello,

I have the same problem with the 4870x2 card and the workaround I found is to change visual effects to none and restart, then videos play fine. It would be great not to have to do that.

Hi Gennady,

I figured out the same thing and I agree that it would be nice not to have to do that. In 8.04 this functionality worked (at least with the 32-bit version -- I didn't try it on AMD64 architecture).

However, this workaround isn't the long-term fix that either of us is looking for and we still need further help. I've also sent feedback to ATI and hopefully we'll have a fix soon.

Hello,

if you install the compiz-fusion-icon package, you can turn off Compiz without having to reboot.
