[kubuntu] what'd be the "network profiles" for?

Asked by Uqbar

I'd like to define different network profiles in Kubuntu Feisty but cannot understand the usefulness of the "network profiles".
I can define profiles but then I cannot do anything with them!
Any hint?

If I recall, 'network profiles' are to do with wireless networking.

If you connect to more than one WLAN, then you will need a 'profile' for each one.

This 'profile' stores information, such as the SSID (if the WLAN doesn't broadcast it), Encryption method used (if any) and the necessary security information to allow your PC/laptop to connect to the WLAN.

This saves you setting up the WLAN each time you come within range of it.

Maybe you are right. But:
1. there is no available option once you add a profile;
2. there is no documentation or help about it;
3. it'd make sense to have (working) profiles also for wired networks.

Thank you for the hints.

In system settings you can choose "load profile" and the profile is loaded. I have a profile "home" with my network settings at home (fixed ip, gateway and such)

and another one, when I'm on the road ( with dhcp etc.)

Keep in mind that adding new profiles are only possible when in admin mode

I got it finally. In my opinion the mechanism to define profiles is counterintuitive.
Something similar to the profiles in OS X would be preferrable.
