The live cd doesn't work

Asked by tol

Downloaded 2 kubuntu versions of the CD: for i386 and for amd64 (I have amd 64). Both load to the following step:

Press Language
Press The CD menu with "Try Ubutu ..." as the default.

Then the first one (i386) shows something like "BUG...." and hangs down, the second dist (amd64) writes PANIC... and something else and also halts at the same place. I'm a beginner in linux and saw it a couple of times only, but this dist is not user friendly. 3-5 years ago I installed Red Hat and Mandrake without problem, and in the beginning of this year I installed ubuntu and it worked fine, but this live CD just doesn't work...

PS: feel lazy to copy details of error messages, now downloading debian live cd to test...

In order to properly diagnose the issue, we need to know the errors that occurred.

The PANIC error from what you described suggests that you are using a 64bit CD on a system that does not support 64bit processing.

Could you also tell us what version of Ubuntu you are trying with?

Funny, I have AMD X2 64 bit 4000+, at least Windows 2003 Server for 64-bit processors works fine.

>Could you also tell us what version of Ubuntu you are trying with?

I found the following thing in one of the dicks:
Kubuntu 8.10 "Intrepid Ibex" - Release i386 (20081029.1)

The release for AMD64 was the same version, but I already deleted it.

PS: I investigated the thing in your forum and somebody also had hang-up problems, and he was recommended to press F6 and check off some items in the menu. I also did this (checked off everything that was in the menu) and... the loader skipped the place when it hung up before and showed the running progress bar, loaded something... for about 2-3 minutes, and then hung up. I waited for 5 minutes more and rebooted...

I can't test that AMD desktop anymore till Monday, but I've taken a 32bit distributive to test it on Core2 Duo notebook tomorrow. It's interesting if this thing would work at least on 1 of 2 computers of mine ;-)

BTW, just run it on ASUS notebook (Core2Duo 1.8GHz). It's almost the same with one small difference: the desktop hung up on a black screen and the notebook hung up with the progress screen. The progress bar just stopped, I waited for 3-5 minutes, tried to turn notebook off but I couldn't - the power button didn't work. I had to find a piece of thin wire to hard-reset the whole notebook using a hidden button on the bottom of the notebook... Really tough distributive. Then I also tried to check off everything in F6 menu and use graphics safe mode, but it's all the same - hangs up somewhere in the middle of the load process.

All in all, 2 out of 2 computers that I tested the cd on don't work with this live cd. I think it should be completely revised, as it's quite unreliable...

I also downloaded "opensuse live cd" (I'm using notebook now), just loaded from it and in a few minutes I saw a working linux with Mozilla Firefox and some other tools preinstalled. So the problem seems to be with "kubuntu live cd" but not with the hardware. Maybe kubuntu uses not safe drivers that casuse some computers to hang during load process???

Maybe you should try "Check CD for Defects" option, when CD is booting. In case it tells you that an error or errors have been found in a file or some files, it means that the CD is faulty.

The CD is OK - yesterday I loaded the same CD on the same notebook in virtual machine (WM WARE WORKSTATION 6) and it worked fine. And I was able to install it to WM without problems. But when I load the same CD directly from the notebook, the progress indicator just sticks and the computer hangs so deep that the power button doesn't work. There are no error messages shown. I think the problem may be in the drivers that come with the live cd and cause problems with ASUS F3Se notebook, as the drivers for virtual machine emulation work fine on the same hardware.

In that case I suggest you create a bug report linked to this question. Click Create Bug Report on the top-left of the site. Try to include as many details as possible, like your notebook hardware and what messages are shown.

This notebook:
http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=5&l2=26&l3=316&l4=0&model=1659&modelmenu=2
The config is CPU T7100, MEM 2Gb, HDD 120Gb, Video ATI 2500, DVDRW/SD/WiFi/BT/camera and other stuff.

Besides, I've put another copy of the live cd to the third PC, with 2-core Athlon CPU, Gigabyte M61PM-S2 motherboard and build in GeForce 6100 video card (nForce 430 chipset). The progress indicator DID run to and fro for a long time on this machine and it looks like the KDE loaded completely (I didn't see it, just my guess) but at some moment the screen completely turned off (physically, there was no video signal to the LCD screen and it turned off), and I couldn't turn it on. Then I started to press all the keys on keyboard and at some moment some kind of blue graphic screen appeared for a millisecond and disappeared at once so I couldn't see what was there (the monitor turned off physically again). Then I couldn't see anything at all and had to plug out the computer out of the wall outlet (the reset and power buttons didn't work for some reason???).

I wonder, is there at least one REAL computer that runs kubuntu without WMWARE or Virtual PC? I've tried 3 computers and all of them have ___DIFFERENT___ problems in different places, so I just don't know what to think. I saw kubunto working in virtual machine only :-(

Sorry for the delay, I've been massively busy.

Could you try with a 32bit cd? If this works, then it's because you don't have a 64bit system capable of running this.

Windows does some quirky things in order to run 64bit so it makes sense that it would run natively on a 32bit system as well.

9.04 is nearing release too. Perhaps it would be beneficial to test it using 32bit and 64bit 9.04 as well? You can grab this from cdimage.ubuntu.com.

Hello Michael,

When I tested it I downloaded both 32 and 64 bit versions, and both
failed, in different places, however. 64 bit version fails at once, 32
bit version fails during the load process. Both Notebook and Desktop
has 64 bit support, the notebook is Intel T7100 and the desktop is AMD
4000+ 64 bit processor.
