Ubuntu 8.10 broken by nvidia drivers?

Asked by TWFJR

Discussion concerning Nvidia drivers not compiled for Ubuntu 8.10. I read that it is not Ubuntu's position to see that graphics drivers work and yet, in my estimation, graphics drivers are essential to the success of any distribution or OS. I have never experienced such trouble with Ubuntu as I have with Ubuntu 8.10. With that said, I began to have trouble with my computer when my CPU fan failed. I could not have imagined that Ubuntu 8.10 would have lost the ability to boot up because of the fan failure. After $500 the tech got the computer working again. It was as if something was compromising the Nvidia graphics driver. Now part of the problem is seemingly associated with other bugs causing Nvidia drivers to fail. My wife's new computer, using Ubuntu 8.10, also verifies this happening. After adding wife as user and deleting owner, deleting /home/owner, the graphics no longer worked. And I cannot get it back. I have searched the internet and reloaded Ubuntu at least eight times. Nothing is resolving this brokenness.

My internet search led me to a bug report saying that the report was being closed because this bug was resolved but that it was apparent that other bugs were causing this problem. That confirmed what I was witnessing. And I believe that there are many bugs affecting Nvidia graphics drivers. Hence, Ubuntu 8.10 is broken. Another had worked on some fixes and stated that users must test them for Ubuntu to present them as updates. I also noticed that this problem has been going on for months, even before the release. I have to wonder why Ubuntu released 8.10 before this brokenness was resolved. Another, in response to this person's efforts to fix driver problems, resolve was to just wait for Ubuntu to put out updates to fix graphic drivers.

I would have been better off paying for professional help that Ubuntu offers. At least then I would have been able to go back to them saying that 8.10 is still not fixed. After spending twelve hours on this problem already, I too am going to wait for Ubuntu to fix 8.10's brokenness.

Wife's computer is running Nvidia GeForce 6100 graphics card. The problem started with adding and deleting default user, "owner." Causing a blank screen. I reloaded Ubuntu 8.10. Did all the updates. Read the release notes from Ubuntu. What graphics driver worked on initial install no longer worked on second install. I've deleted, purged the driver and downloaded "glx" driver and still the driver does not work. I've used 173 and 177 with no luck. I get mixed messages concerning 96 but since my computer is running 96, maybe that will work on wife's computer. Note that there is something broken that is affecting the graphics drivers. Note that there may be a combination of graphic bugs and othe bugs breaking Ubuntu's ability to run said graphics.

This website has a link to nvidia Linux user forum where some people may be able to help you to debug the problem:

http://www.nvidia.com/page/support.html

The drivers are also available there, but it is probably better to get them through Ubuntu if possible.

Good luck in resolving this problem.

I can't help with this problem. I've been dealing with "Broken Ubuntu" For 6 months. My Nvidia drivers don't work. all I get is the nv driver and no 3D graphics. I'm ready to just delete it completely and use Windows only. I had high hopes for Ubuntu but am very frustrated and tired of trying to fix something that should work "out of the box". 8.04 works fine but I like keeping up with the newest versions. It's not just Ubuntu either. I've tried other distros and nvidia is broken there too. Linux community...you've got to do better.

Can you help with this problem?
