How can you revert the X login system to default?

Asked by Gazz

I have been using Edgy for around a month and have slowly found my way around the system. Now I have started to tinker with things and have managed to cause myself some problems.

I started to follow the auto-login guide listed here:

http://doc.gwos.org/index.php/Automatic_Login_No_Authentication

The parts I completed were those that I thought were related to Edgy, which were the sections below the subheadings "Use Mingetty" and "Under Edgy". The wiki entries are numbered:

1.2
1.4
1.5

When I restarted the system, I am presented with the command-prompt user login. Once logged in I have to type startx to get into ubuntu (gnome) desktop. What I would like help with are:

a) Is there a way to revert the changes that I have made? E.G retrieve the original tty1 file for ubuntu edgy along with re-installing the login manager?

b) Have I missed something vital that would enable the auto login to be completed?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Thank you for this question.

Just browsing about the instructions, I would think just the installation of the start manager (for gnome gdm) should go already a long way and maybe even solve it altogether.

I hope this helps.

I see this system does auto-thanks when clicking "question solved", but I want to say it was a lot more straight forward than I thought it was going to be. I did exactly as txwikinger stated and my problem was resolved. After posting here I thought I might have had to:

- Restore tty1 to its original install state
- Restore .bash_profile to its original
- Re-install GDM

Doing GDM on its own worked so many many thanks :D
