linux driver for phillips spc100nc webcam

Asked by JIMDB

I am brand new to Linux but willing to learn. My Son built the computer I am using and I find the operating system easy to use so far. When her first turned it on after setting it up at my house, the system refused to boot. He discovered that the webcam was preventing the system from booting. He suggested I search the web for a driver. I found several references to problems with the phillips webcam but I couldn't identify any drivers or if one exists. Could you suggest solution or do I have to get a new webcam?

Thanks
JimB

There are a few Philips webcams listed as working but the spc100nc is not on any of the lists.

That does not mean that the drivers used for the working Philips webcams will not work with the spc100nc but I could not say that with any certainty.

While the installation of a driver is not that difficult, it may seem overwhelming for someone new to Linux.

If you want to replace the webcam, Logitech is Linux-friendly and most Logitech webcams work well. I use a Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000. There are others that will also work.

When you decide on which webcam you would like, I would be pleased to advise you further.

When I connect the webcam before booting up the computer, the boot up stops intirely. I am using the skype program for the webcam and if I connect the webcam after booting up and try to connect to a contact through skype the camera still does not work and when I use the test video feature on skype, it doesn't do anything. There are no error messages and the camera does not work. I'm using unbutu and gnome. I have been going over the info on the unbuntu website and as a novice I feel a bit overwhelmed.

Thanks

In that case you will have to consider buying another webcam. One of the cameras recommended for use in Skype is the Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000. The picture quality is superb.
