8.04 - need flash and java

Asked by Dave Haring

hello. no i dont speak linux - i wish i did!
i tried in the forum to no avail
i also read much of the existing info and tried several things but nothing seems to work

i installed ubuntu 8.04
now need java and flash
have already installed restricted extras, which, didnt seem to do anything
also installed the 6u11 bin file, which, also didnt seem to do anything
the java verifier page says i have an old version (6)
flash says it is already installed but sites that use it say its not
i tried flashplugin-nonfree and icedtea6-plugin
i did this: gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
added this: deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu hardy partner
did this: sudo apt-get update
then i went to the Synaptic Package Manager and ran everything i could find

keep in mind all the items above dont come with instructions on HOW to do any of it, but, i push some buttons, some things happen, sometimes i get a vague error message or two, but, i dunno, still nothing works. one guy says go with icetea and the next guy says definitely not. im not too sure of anything. i feel like im going in circles. waaaaaaa!

and just like that, what wasnt working before has decided to work. spotty but it works. this has now enabled me to to focus on one specific thing. java, on their page that verifies your version etc., it says i have an old version. how to get the new version? i can download it and save it to the desktop but then what? it says theres no application to open it. thanks.

for flash you have 3 options (as far as I know)
swfdec - this one is created and maintained by the linux community
gnash - this one is created and maintained by the linux community
flashplugin-nonfree - this one is adobe's flashplugin

for java I think there might be one or two others but I've used these before, and icedtea works, I'm fairly sure sun-java6 does too, but I haven't used it in a while.
icedtea6-plugin - open source community maintained java implementation
sun-java6-bin - sun's java implementation

This is the problem as of slightly before jan 09

ubuntu restricted extras still installs Flash 9 and the web now calls for Flash 10 to be installed
some good automated scripts out there to get 10 but it wont show up as the non free plugin
for 9--remove it -- ubuntu 8.10 works fine but 8.04 was never updated..on its last leg
so even if you have everything in order check the bottom of the page for the date on the post
you followed the directions of.

http://www.psychocats.net/ --is still the best resource for all things ubuntu --most guides comprehensive and in plain English.
