This version of microsoft is counterfeit? How do I fix the nagging message?

Asked by Melinda

My dad's computer is giving him this error message “This version of Microsoft is counterfeit” he's running windows XP. How do I fix the nagging message? I used to have the instructions to fix it but it was deleted when I purchased my new computer. Thank God I moved to Ubuntu but my dad's is still with Windows. So if any one can help I would really appreciate it. Bye!

Your father is probably used to using Windows and does not want to shift to a new operating system. Any operating sytem, whether it be Windows or Ubuntu brings with it a period of learning to become familiar with its workings and, as one gets older, often changes of that nature become more difficult to accommodate.

I do not have a solution for you on circumventing this obnoxious Microsoft message nor will you find a solution at the Microsoft knowledge base.

To advocate a solution to bypass the restrictions and intrusions of Microsoft would be unethical - even though the practices such as the one that you describe are abhorrent to advocates of the free software movement.

What I can suggest, is that you persuade your father to switch to Ubuntu and offer him your promise that you will be his guide (the Ubuntu community will help you with that).

If your father is willing, save all that you can of personal files, pictures, etc., onto a USB stick, insert the Ubuntu CD into the CD player and replace XP with Ubuntu.
