Will Ubuntu work on a iBook G4 PPC?

Asked by Trithious

I'm in limbo on what is best for my iBook G4 PPC. Currently it is running Mac OS X 10.3.9 and only has 256MB of RAM so if I were to upgrade it staying with Apple I would only be able to go to OS X 10.4.11.

So my question is what would be best for my iBook G4 PPC....Tiger 10.4.11 or Ubuntu 8.10? (side note I can't buy RAM for my iBook G4 because Apple.com no longer sells this, and only can be bought from a 3rd party which I'm not going to do because you can never trust the 3rd party sales).

Thank you for your time,

Trithious

I am not an owner of any Apple devices, but I think the following may be useful.

There is a G4 compatible port of Ubuntu 8.10 available here: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/daily-live/current/

256MB may be too little for full gnome desktop play. I would recommend replacing it for a lighter desktop environment such as XFCE after installation.

Can your Ubutu desktop be used?
If yes How?
