Installing 8.10 on an HP mini (2133)

Asked by Alf Mollerud

I'm trying to install Ubuntu 8.10 on my new toy - HP 'mini' 2133.
When the system loads after installation, I can make out the background image and a window or dialog-box with non-intelligible title (not proper letters) and then the system appears frozen.

I'm guessing there is something terribly wrong with the video-driver and that it crashes with VIA S3 chipset ?
Anybody know how to get around this ?

It is not uncommon for the splash screen to cause trouble with the X.org driver or console framebuffer, so you can try disabling it and verify if that's the cause of your problem.

To change the boot parameters, read this:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions

Remove the options "splash" to disable the splash screen during the boot sequence.

Alf,

I just installed it on my mini-note a few days ago. I found I had to choose the safe mode video to get the install to work (or you could try the text install, safe mode video did it for me).

If you get the screen resolution working right, let me know! My mini note has a 1280x768 panel, but I can only choose 1280x720 for some reason.

There are some differences between mini-notes, but not many. If you have problems with the wireless, try using the Broadcom B43 driver by going to
System>Administration>Hardware
If that doesn't work, then try the STA driver (changing drivers is all pointy clicky, easy to figure out).

Good luck
