blank menus in applications

pop-up desciptions (when I mouse-over an icon) and dropdown menus are blank in QCad and OO. However, when I move the pointer rapidly back and forth across where the writing should be it is flickering on and off

Before to go in the deep...

Please be sure your system is fully updated/upgraded with no pending packages or errors:

Open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:
(when the system ask you a password give your user password, you will not see nothing when you type it, then press enter)

sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get --fix-missing install
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get autoremove

marcobra, will you stop advising issuing such commands that may introduce other problems ? Specially without any explanation as to what they do!

@gerald1: you may have better luck asking the respective authors or community for those applications. My first instinct would be to try them with desktop effects off.

Fabian please tell me a valid reason. (you mean is too difficult to write or copy and paste 10 rows in the terminal)

Tell me why i can't suggest, in this case, to the user to check the Ubuntu status before to go in something more complex... ?

Then why you don't give a valid different answer for the original question to the user here...?
