8.10 vs 8.04

Asked by KKevin901

I am using 8.04 hardy and lately installed also the 8.10 for trial. By the way, very happy with the discovery of Ubuntu 8.04 and this community.

I installed 8.10 as tri-boot in parallel with 8.04 and Win2000 on an AMD 32bits machine. It was installed smoothly, applications configuration on both are same. On this very same machine, 8.04 hardy speed performance is comparable with Win2000. But I am aware 8.10 is running significantly slower those general programs I frequently used such as Firefox and OpenOffice.

Would like to learn if any special set up or trimming need to be done on 8.10 configuration. Or, 8.10 is actually more demanding on hardware resources. Any advice are appreciate.

Yes, I agree 8.10 has better user interface layout, nicer and improved functionalities.

Since after I installed, I accepted and installed all updates whenever it arrived. But it is running slow that quite often unbearable I switch back to 8.04 to continue my work. I am looking forward 8.10 go through the mature process become stable and more responsive that I shall completely advance to 8.10 platform. Or, there already has some tweak to improve that I did not aware of.

According to http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/releasenotes/810 there are problems with the proprietary nVidia drivers on some graphic cards so the free nv driver instead. As the nv drivers don't support 3D acceleration this may be the reason for your slowdown (if you have such a nVidia card).

It is actually an old but decent machine with ordinary ATI display card. I have been using it for years, it is still running Win2000 when I discover Ubuntu community.

Out of curiosity that I search around to learn more about Ubuntu 8.10. Read about more reviews and discussion on web, those gave me the impression there are some room that 8.10 can catch up with previous release in term of speed. I am looking forward to to witness that. After all, I am much appreciate Ubuntu providing this open platform as an alternative to Windows.

There's lots of trimming that can be done to boost performance, regardless of whether you're running 8.04 or 8.10. I would suggest:

http://www.zolved.com/synapse/view_content/28209/How_to_make_OpenOffice_run_faster_in_Ubuntu

to speed up OpenOffice. I noticed a big improvement when I made these settings modifications.

If you're really wanting more speed and depending on your confidence, consider using a lighter windows manager like XFCE or LXDE. You should definitely consider this option if you're running with older system hardware.
