Im completely new to ubuntu so please go easy on me lol

Do you mean normal Ubuntu installation leaving XP in place for dual boot or Wubi?

You can see the USB devices found by calling lsusb in a terminal window (command prompt)

You can see your wireless interfaces by calling iwconfig in a terminal window.

I'm not an expert on these. But providing more detail might raise your chances to get an answer from someone :)

What I forgot to mention: Run lsbusb as root and use option -v. Like this

sudo lsbusb -v

The output might be quite verbose, but by searching for the name of your card maufacturer, you can verify yourself that Linux has recognized the USB device.
