Ubuntu 8.1.0 install inside Windows, how to make disk portion larger

Asked by Mahogan

I recently Installed Ubuntu 8.1.0 within Windows XP (like a program), when installing, I chose 5GB disk space of my 120GB laptop drive. I was uncertain if I would like Ubuntu or not so I limited the size as my drive was nearly full. The install worked great but I am running out of disk size that is apportioned to Ubuntu install. Within Windows XP, I freed up more drive space (about 60GB) thinking it would help Ubuntu, but it doesn't. So, is there a way to change the Ubuntu portion of 5GB drive space to more like 20GB? So that I can install more programs within Ubuntu? Without uninstalling and reinstalling? BTW, I am a complete Ubuntu Newbe. Thanks for any advice and help. ~Mahogan

Go to http://lubi.sourceforge.net/lvpm.html and look for "Resizing virtual disks using LVPM (not necessary if you're transferring the install to a dedicated partition)". That should let you resize it.

why dont you install ubuntu 8.10 on dual boot mode which is more simple than going thru all these processes. Since that is a complete OS ubuntu 8.10 and will be better for future use.
Installing is fairly simple just download the iso burn it bootable and boot thru that thereafter follow the steps mentioned there and make a swap file of 500 Mb (should be enough) and ext3 format can be 40 GB partition on your hdd without disturbing your windows setup.
iso image can be downloaded directly from www.ubuntu.com
